Diamond Friction Shims: A Cutting-Edge Safety Innovation in Formula Student Racing

08/19/2026
In the high-speed racing world, every design detail can potentially impact performance and safety. While developing a new-generation race car, a Formula Student team from a German university identified a safety concern with conventional bolted connections under sudden power surges—bolts were at risk of shearing under excessive transverse loads, potentially leading to drivetrain failure. To address this, the team innovatively introduced Diamond Friction Shims, enhancing power transmission reliability in a simple yet highly effective manner.

Unlike professional top-tier motorsports, Formula Student places greater emphasis on engineering practice and technological innovation. Participating teams are required to design, manufacture, and race their own vehicles within constrained budgets, while undergoing both dynamic performance tests and static technical evaluations. This competition not only serves as a platform for students to demonstrate their engineering capabilities but also functions as a breeding ground for future automotive technologies.

In race car design, drivetrain stability is paramount. During the development of an all-wheel-drive system, the university team discovered that the constant-velocity joints and wheel hubs connected via conventional bolted joints were prone to loosening or even fracture under extreme operating conditions, particularly during abrupt torque spikes. While upgrading bolt specifications or redesigning the joint configuration could address the issue, time, cost, and manufacturing constraints necessitated a more efficient alternative.

After extensive testing, the team ultimately opted to install Diamond Friction Shims between the wheel hub and the constant-velocity joint. These shims effectively prevent slippage by increasing the frictional force at the contact interface, all without requiring modifications to the existing structure or increases in preload. Installation is straightforward: simply ensure the contact surfaces are clean and free of grease, place the shims into the joint interfaces, and torque the bolts to specification.

This solution not only enhanced drivetrain reliability but also eliminated the need for complex structural redesigns, exemplifying the engineering principle of "maximizing benefits at minimal cost."

The successful application of Diamond Friction Shims demonstrates the creativity of student engineers when tackling technical challenges. While well-suited for racing applications, this technology also holds promise for broader use in industrial power transmission, mechanical manufacturing, and beyond.
